Export bill (Factura de Exportación)
In order to promote tourism, Chile has a law that exempts foreign tourists from paying the IVA tax (Impuesto al Valor Agregado = 19%) in accommodation. he foreigner can ask for an Export Bill (Factura de Exportación), but only if the hotel has a permission to issue such bills. Expensive hotels usually have this permission, but many small hotels don't, specially family guesthouses. he export bill is issued and has to be paid in American dollars or with credit card when accepted, but it can't be paid in Chilean pesos. his regulation only applies for touristic accommodation, and doesn't apply for restaurants, excursions, car rentals and so on. However, it is possible to ask for an export bill in case of accommodation with full board service or a tourist pack that includes excursions.
Important: The foreign tourist can ask for an export bill, but if the hotel doesn't issue them, he can't demand to take the 19% taxes off the bill.
Note: Hostel La Tetera issues export bills. We accept US$ cash, but we don't accept credit cards or traveller cheques.
